Anyone who has been involved with the Eastern Region of MAG for any length of time will be well aware that it has struggled to retain a regional Rep despite the best efforts of a number of volunteers over the years. With an area extending from the Humber to Luton and a total lack of regional identity this may come as no surprise to some of you. Lincolnshire is the second biggest county in England. With its rural road network it meant Regional Reps in the south had a 4 hour round trip to visit branches in Lincolnshire. Similarly when the Rep lived in Lincolnshire he had a 4 hour round trip when visiting Luton (not easy on a week day!). It has long been the belief of Mid Lincs MAG that the region needs splitting into two, forming a Lincolnshire Region and a Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northants Region.
At the Eastern Region AGM a motion was passed with an overwhelming majority to take this issue to the MAG Annual Conference in April. At that same AGM the region agreed that a new Cambridge branch could come under the East Anglia Regional Rep as they were on that region's doorstep and it was easier to attend East Anglia events than meetings in Lincolnshire (establishing the principle already that the present Eastern region is too large).
A motion was duly taken to the MAG Annual Conference in April and despite getting the support of the meeting, failed by a small margin to get the two thirds majority required for constitutional change. A number of members and officers of MAG expressed the opinion that had we been able to name a new regional rep at that meeting they would have voted in support of the motion.
MAG's General Secretary Nich Brown suggested that as it was the will of the meeting that the region be split into two, that consensus would be taken to the National Committee (NC) to consider a way forward.
Having taken on board what members of NC said and what was expressed by other members at the AGM, Mid Lincs MAG can understand the concern that splitting the region could potentially result in 2 regions with no rep instead of one. However we believe that it is more likely that 2 reps can be found to represent smaller regions.
Therefore we are looking for volunteers for the prospective post of Regional Rep for Lincolnshire. We also have to consider that depending upon the outcome of the NC's deliberations it is possible that the balance of the region may be absorbed into other regions or see the creation of a Beds, Cambs, Northants Region, the latter being the best for MAG in that the workload would not fall upon existing reps. Therefore we are requesting that this email gets passed on to other branches in the south of the region for consideration.
So folks, do you fancy being the prospective Regional Rep for Lincolnshire or a potential new region to the south?
Each potential new region already has existing branches needing representation (Mid Lincs MAG and NE Lincs MAG for the potential Lincolnshire Region with Cambridge MAG and Rushden and District MAG for the potential region to the south).
MAG needs to grow with effective regions, more branches, and more members. Mid Lincs MAG believe there is an opportunity for MAG to grow with this proposal to split the Eastern Region, allowing regional reps to be more effective assisting in the growth of new branches, affiliating clubs and encouraging new members and new events.
This is still early days in the process but if you are interested in either of these potential posts please reply to mlmupdate@hotmail.co.uk.
